MoVEMENT

“The body says what words cannot.”
— Martha Graham

Movement is therapeutic. Since we communicate through movement significantly more than through spoken word, incorporating movement into a therapeutic relationship offers opportunities to express what words cannot. Developing a deeper connection to movement, posture, and kinesthetic awareness can offer insights into subconscious thought and movement patterns. Our preparation for medicine sessions includes guided group movement activities to facilitate mind-body connection, somatic awareness, and posture dynamics. We recognize that the mind and body are reflections of one another and utilize movement to enhance mobility toward emotional resolution. With permission, we can draw from manual therapy techniques during the medicine sessions to support and improve the journey experience. During integration sessions, we connect the journeyer’s inner experience to their somatic expressions and offer mind-body connections to return to the lessons of the journey.

Exploring nonverbal communication helps address interpersonal relationship conflicts, increasing pro-social behavior, and improving self-awareness. Learning to use one’s body in a more efficient, attuned manner not only strengthens the ability to be more present and grounded in relationships with others, but it also dramatically improves our relationship with self. The practice of enhancing preferred sensations offers choice and empowerment. The practice of building acceptance of less pleasant sensations improves emotional regulation, reduces impulsivity, and diminishes stress.

Movement of the body creates the experience of the mind—and, similarly, the quality of the mind manifests in the movement of the body.

The Movement + Mindfulness + Medicine office is equipped for the assessment and design of at-home movement processes for those who first need to find comfort in their bodies before seeking activities in the community.
